Top 10 Kitchen Remodeling and Design Trends for 2019

When it comes to kitchens and your home cabinetry needs, we’ve certainly seen our share of them. From kitchens dating back to the 1940s to recent new construction demo kitchen overhauls, our pros have done it all!

With kitchens at the heart of the home, the design should reflect your individual style. No longer are kitchens cookie cutter designs where you can only select a tile and cabinet color, leaving you wanting for more. Rather, the customization of doors, kitchen functionality & organization, and ornate hardware have made themselves commonplace in modern kitchen remodels.

Below are our Top 10 Kitchen Remodeling & Design Trends for 2019, that we don’t see going out of style anytime soon!

1. Mixing Countertop Materials

If you’re in the market for a fashion-forward countertop, granite, quartz and laminate are no longer your only choices. Wood countertops are coming on strong and the look of a wood countertop against a beautiful quartz is just breathtaking! Mixing quartz countertop styles is also an interesting direction to take your new kitchen remodel. No matter what you choose, mixing countertop materials allows your kitchen more dynamic and grants an instant “wow” factor and a tip of the hat to an individualistic, yet key style element.

2. Opt for Functionality

As anyone active in a kitchen can tell you, kitchen storage is always an issue. Opting for functionality in your kitchen remodel will allow you to easily store your kitchen essentials as well as grant you new ways to implement design and style into your kitchen. With unique ways to store your dishes, pans, baking trays, etc., your kitchen will flow as easily as an egg on a greased pan.

Utilize the space in your kitchen – those corner cabinets are great for storing items you don’t use everyday but still have a need for – try a corner cabinet look and feel for a quirky design trick. Check out some clever multi-tiered drawer designs for added functionality in your kitchen remodel.

We also suggest storing silverware by height, instead of laying down in a drawer – not only is it a cool look but also a space saver trick! Consider using that space above your oven or next to the stove for something not only useful but also in an effort to organize your kitchen and your cooking estetic. Don’t be afraid to dream it up! We can handle it.

Lastly, opt for soft close drawers – They’re actually included in all of New Look Cabinets’ cabinet builds! There is nothing worse than a slammed kitchen drawer *cringe*

3. Bold Fixtures and Hardware

Bold color isn’t the only way to create excitement in your kitchen. Don’t be afraid to buy that crazy kitchen faucet that looks like it belongs in a restaurant kitchen – there are so many options now! Want something more modern? Go for it – trust me, it’s out there and your kitchen can take it!

Another easy and fun way to add character into your kitchen is by opting for bold hardware. Bars are back when it comes to handles, but don’t be afraid to try some ideas to add extra quirk to your cabinetry. We had a client who made her own kitchen knobs from stones she found on a hike while traveling. Get creative. It’s your kitchen and you should love it!

Regardless of which way you go, opt for hiding hinge hardware (also included in New Look Cabinet builds) in kitchens for a modern look and an uncluttered and modern approach to kitchen cabinetry.

4. Grey is the “New White”

While all white kitchens have dominated pinterest boards for years, grey cabinet undertones lend a timeless, totally livable vibe with a sophisticated flare. Let’s face it, white cabinets are elegant but any mother will tell you, they get dirty super fast. Grey cabinets allow for a little less meticulousness and maybe allow your inner clean freak to rest a while.

But, don’t be fooled – while grey may be the new white and the look may change as styles evolve, the appeal of a classic black-and-white kitchen never dies! #longlivewhitekitchens

5. Dramatic Center Islands

While, in the past, larger kitchen islands became the jack-of-all-trades, in 2019 and beyond, simply extending the kitchen island into living room spaces in homes with open plan designs just won’t do. Single level Kitchen Islands are a must to expand valuable prep space, of course. Kitchen islands are now the focal point and the hub of the kitchen, meant to create an impact, and its design must make a statement.

One major trend we’re seeing is wrapped stone kitchen islands. While some opt for the same stone as a backsplash, others have given interior design a whirl in their kitchen designs by swapping stones and textiles, even extending islands for counter height dining areas.

For those who wish for more color in their kitchen, think about painting the kitchen island a unique shade for an extra “pop” to your kitchen remodeling design. Get creative!

6. Integrated Appliances

While we’re on the topic of kitchen islands, we’re seeing a shift from wall mounted and stacked appliances to ones integrated into kitchen islands. Not only do your appliances no longer stick out like a sore thumb right away, but this trend also opens new worlds for designs- appliances can now stand alone as a stylish statement piece or quietly recede into surrounding cabinetry. This trend favors universal design principles and keeps small appliances accessible. New microwave models, including microwave drawers, load from the top for added convenience.

One of our personal favorite integrated appliances does away with the traditional stainless steel fridge that everyone goes straight for at Best Buy, instead offering a seamless look of elegance with an integrated refrigerator, effortless matched to your chosen cabinet style.

7. Trough Sinks

While clean lines have always been in, the newest trend is to opt for a trough sink addition to your kitchen remodel. While you’d still have your traditional sink to prepare food, this one allows you to chill oysters or your favorite processo while you prepare dinner or entertain your guests – genius! Functional and yet, these unique styles make a bold design statement in your home and is ideal for entertaining areas.

8. Open Shelving

Another alternative for homeowners with older cabinets in good condition is to remove the doors altogether and convert their existing cabinets to open shelving. Interior shelves can be removed or reconfigured inside the existing cabinet frames for a thoroughly modern and updated look. With conversion to open shelving there is an opportunity to refinish interiors in another color from the exterior or add beadboard backs. While we love installing new upper kitchen cabinets for our clients, this trend does not seem to be going anywhere. Some have even taken to removing some cabinetry all together and opting for floating glass shelving. This trend allows for unique ways to include industrial elements into your kitchen remodel design.

9. Mullion Cabinet Doors

We ABSOLUTELY LOVE this kitchen remodeling design trend. While glass doors have made a huge comeback in the last few years, mullion accent doors are making a huge splash right now!

Mullion accent doors are not usually used throughout an entire kitchen, but are used as a decorative accent. Like a little peeping window for your kitchen items, mullion accent doors give you a way to incorporate your design style directly into your kitchen door style. There’s a vast array of designs to choose from – our personal favorite is the half circles.

10. New Meets Old

The skinny on this design trend is that distressed cabinetry is out – finally. Distressed and glazed cabinet finishes are a fixture in many a country kitchen. While this style of cabinet rose in popularity over the last decade, it’s now falling out of fashion. When choosing finishes for a cabinet replacement or refacing, choose more modern looks, whether it be crisp paint colors or clean wood tones.

We’ve seen this trend dwindle for a while now but some country shabby chicks still love the look. If you just must distress, we suggest opting for a mix-and-match option, where just the island is distressed or simply distressing the upper cabinets. This allows for a clean and modern look to your kitchen, while still allowing your individual style to shine (or not shine, so to speak) through.

Regardless of your kitchen remodeling and design desire, we can make it happen. We’ve been breathing new life into kitchens for years now and have been keeping our eye on the latest trends, passing them off to our customers time and time again.
